Press Release 17 May 2007

Scottish Friends of Palestine expresses its deep concern over recent developments in the Gaza Strip. We are mindful that the international community has no qualms in supplying one side of the current civil conflict with arms – thereby encouraging the depressing events now being witnessed.

We are mindful that the international community has chosen to reward the application and result of the democratic process, warmly embraced by the Palestinian under occupation, by placing an economic and financial boycott on the same people. The first time in history that a people under military occupation has been embargoed by those states who regard themselves as enlightened.

However, we argue that the only beneficiary of the current events is the occupying power, the state of Israel. Civil strife in the Gaza Strip serves only to divert attention from the real cause of the misery of the Palestinian people – the imperial power, Israel, and its brutal voracious appetite for denying the Palestinian people their rights and their land.

Conditions of starvation are not the ideal conditions for fostering rational decisions. However Scottish Friends of Palestine urges the current leadership of the Palestinian people to pull back from the brink and direct their undoubted energy in support of their impoverished people – and against the occupation.

Scottish Friends of Palestine is a firm advocate of the total boycott of all Israeli institutions, academic and cultural bodies and Israeli products – until as such times that the Israeli state ceases to boycott the rights of the Palestinian people, and international law as it pertains to the Palestinian people.
